So you woke up late after a crazy night, and now you’re craving a high-protein breakfast. Something strong that will feed your body and mind – pleasing to the eye, but also mouthwatering and healthy. Well, the only logical solution to your problem is a steak sandwich. There are only a few other things that can pull a person right from the bed in an instant.
However, if you have never made this delicacy before, you might be in a pickle. Knowing how to sear your steak, or which bun to use can make a whole lot of difference. The point is – the devil’s in the details. So to avoid experimenting and possibly ruining your breakfast, here’s how to make a perfect steak sandwich.
The Perfect Steak Sandwich Recipe
Before you can make this perfect sandwich, you’ll need the right ingredients. You can’t just take the steak and some vegetables and stuff the bread with it. A real steak sandwich takes patience, premium ingredients, and a personal touch.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- One perfectly shaped hoagy roll
- One perfect cut of pork shoulder
- Some lettuce and a tomato
- Mustard, mayo
- Butter, brown sugar, barbeque sauce
Now that you know exactly which ingredients you need, it’s time to start making the sandwich itself. A quick note on the meat quality – you want to get the freshest meat you can get your hands on. Buy from your local butcher shop instead of going to a general store or grocery store.
Also, it’s best to go with hoagy rolls for your sandwich. If you like Philly-style cheesesteaks, you’ll love this type of pastry for your sandwich as well.
Season your steak with salt and pepper only. Be sure to rub the ingredients well. Cover it in plastic wrap and leave it on the side for half an hour.
Get your chopping board and start cutting the onion. The goal is to chop them into thin strips. This will make your caramelized garlic perfectly sized. More importantly, instead of being crunchy, it will be tender and juicy.
Heat a tablespoon of olive oil on a medium-sized grill pan. Be sure that the pan is preheated before you place your steak.
Unwrap your perfectly seasoned steak and place it on a preheated pan. Sear both sides of steak for about 3 minutes. After that, lower the heat to medium and continue turning the steak until you have a nice pink color in the middle. The ideal cooking time should be around 7-8 minutes.
After removing the steak, in the same pan, add previously chopped onion, around one teaspoon of sugar, and butter. Make sure that the burner is set on medium heat. Cook with occasional stir until your onion starts to caramelize, then add a drizzle of barbeque sauce and remove from the pan.
Get your hoagy roll, cut it, and start adding mayo and mustard to both sides. Add slices of tomato and one or two leaves of lettuce. You don’t want to overcrowd it, therefore making a mess with the first bite. Once that’s done, the only thing remains is the steak.
Cut your perfectly cooked steak to stripes. This way, you will have bite-sized chunks in your sandwich that are easy to chew. Place those heavenly stripes of steak into your already prepared hoagy roll, and voila!
The only thing that remains is to taste it and realize that it’s the most perfect steak sandwich you’ve ever made. If you don’t want to experiment, you can get more awesome recipes for mouthwatering dishes in our blog section.
