As we’ve mentioned, you can add a bunch of extra flavors on top of the core ingredients, and you simply can’t go wrong.

What Is French Toast?

Contrary to popular belief, French toast isn’t actually a French recipe. While no one knows exactly who came up with the simple French toast recipe, it is believed that it originates from a Roman recipe that included frying bread previously soaked in milk.

In essence, this particular meal is as simple as it can be. All you need is some bread, milk, and eggs. Apart from those three core ingredients, you can use whatever you like to fine-tune the flavor according to your own preferences.

However, while it is a pretty simple recipe, there are some things you should keep in mind; for instance, the quality of bread.

What is the Best Bread for French Toast?

As you can assume, a good French toast recipe must include high-quality bread since it’s one of the core ingredients that determine the taste. Here are a couple of types of bread we would recommend using:

  • Baguettes

The good thing about this type is that you can cut them as thickly as you want. More importantly, it’s not a dense type of bread, meaning it doesn’t have to be soaked for too long. In fact, only a few seconds will do.

This type of bread is typically the most frequently used type for French toast in restaurants. It’s relatively dense, buttery, and if soaked correctly, it ends up being super fluffy once it’s cooked.

  • Regular Sandwich Bread

One of the fantastic things about French toast is that it can be made with typical thinly sliced sandwich bread. It won’t be as fluffy as brioche, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to enjoy it!

No matter what type of bread you have at your disposal, as long as you stick to these fundamentals, you should be able to make a stellar breakfast.

  • Ingredients
  • 8 slices of bread (preferably brioche)
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Instructions

Use a shallow bowl or dish to whisk eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Preheat a pan or a skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter. Take a slice of bread and dip both sides of it into the egg mixture and wait for a couple of seconds for it to soak. Once it’s soaked, cook it on medium heat for about 4 minutes per side and add more butter if needed.

That’s it! How easy was that?
